Happy Dance Two: Yes, Teens Still Read Books!

A man in his 30s asked me yesterday, “Are teens still reading books or do they just go to the library to hang out with their friends and do their homework and use the Internet?”

My answer was, “Oh, my goodness, YES! Teens still read books! According to the Carmel Clay Public Library’s monthly circulation statistics, 12% more books were checked out (borrowed) from the library’s Young Adult (teen) collection in 2009 than were checked out in 2008.”
And that's not even counting the books that teens are checking out from the Reference Department or Youth Services Department!  The scope of the YA collection is recreational reading for high school students.
Are teens still reading books?
OMG yes!
(And for the record, I am delighted that they – you! – come to the library to hang out with friends and do homework and use the Internet, too.)
Hope
