Above is a photo of this year's Teen Library Council* members explaining to the teams how to play The Treasure Hunt Game as part of the TLC's annual Pajama Party for 4th & 5th Graders.
I have already referred to the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Teen Library Council several times on this blog. I confess that I love being the adult sponsor of it. You may have been wondering how YOU could become a member of the TLC, too.
Well, guess what? Now is the time of year when TLC applications are available at the Young Adult Services desk on the second floor of the library!
The application has a detailed information sheet plus a set of questions for you to answer in writing. Completed applications must be turned back in to the YA desk by June 15, 2010.
The TLC application process also includes a brief interview with me and one or more returning TLC members. I call all of the applicants after June 15 to set up interviews for June or July.
After everyone has been interviewed, applicants receive either a “congratulations” letter or a “sorry – please try again next year” letter from me in August.
You must be going into grade 7 or older to apply. Preference is given to residents of Carmel, Indiana. Other criteria for selection include:
· A desire to promote reading
· A desire to support the library
· The ability to work cooperatively with people of various ages and backgrounds
· A commitment to attend monthly meetings on a regular basis
There are almost always more excellent applicants than openings. We strive to maintain an age, gender and school balance on the council and to select members with different personalities, skills, and interests.
If you are eligible and interested, I hope you will apply!
And speaking of the TLC, go to http://www.carmelreads.org to check out the fun 2-minute video that TLC members made to promote the Young Adult Summer Reading Program! Librarian Jamie organized it, library videographer Marcus shot and edited it, and TLC members were the stars. Thank you, everyone who helped to make this year’s video!
Hope
* The TLC is an advisory board of two groups of students (fifty total) in grades 7-12 who meet regularly with me (Hope Baugh, manager of the library’s Young Adult Services Department) to discuss books, movies, and music; to help plan selected library programs; to give input on library issues related to teens; to promote reading; to promote use of the library; and to assist in selecting books to purchase for the library's Young Adult collection.
