Have you ever heard of the “Rosie Award”? Officially, it is the Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School Book Award. Teens from all over the state read and rank one or more of the 20 or so contenders during the school year. The book with the most points from the ranking is the winner.

I heard recently that the Rosie winner for 2009-2010 is Unwind by Neal Shusterman. It received 2,969 points from 659 votes.

I want to say to the author, “Congratulations, Neal, and thanks for writing this book!”

I also heard that for the first time ever, the Rosie Committee is naming two HONOR books in the Rosie contest. The two HONOR books for the 2009-2010 school year are Deadline by Chris Crutcher with 2,251 points and Sold by Patricia McCormick with 1,983 points.

Congratulations to those authors, too!

Also: 68 schools/libraries participated in the program this year with a total of 27,523 points and 7,233 votes cast.
I applaud everyone that voted!
Most students in Carmel, Indiana vote at their schools, but Carmel teens can get a head start on reading next year’s Rosie contenders over the summer because the Carmel Clay Public Library buys copies of the contenders so that people can borrow them from their public library, too. The new Rosies should be on the shelves and ready to check out on this coming Tuesday, May 26.
In the meantime, several of this year’s contenders will be used for this summer’s Battle of the Books – Rosie Edition. Teens going into grades 9-12 can register at the YA desk in the library or by calling 317-814-3983. The organizational meeting will be on June 21, 2010, 1:30-2:30pm. The actual battle will be on Wednesday, July 28, 2010, 6:30-8:30pm. You can either put your own team together or register on your own and we will add you to a team.
Both the Rosie and the Young Hoosier Book Award, which is given for books enjoyed by middle school students and younger, are administered by the Indiana Library Federation. (http://www.ilfonline.org) Here is a little more information about the award from the ILF website:
Who is Eliot Rosewater?
Eliot Rosewater is a recurring fictional character in Kurt Vonnegut's novels, including God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. Vonnegut is a famous Hoosier author who grew up in Indianapolis. This award was named to honor him and all Indiana writers. The award is often referred to as the "Rosie Award" or "Rosie."
‘See you at the library!
Hope
