Here are Nimisha’s notes from the Choice Picks discussion during the November 2009 meeting of the Tuesday group of the Carmel Clay Public Library’s Teen Library Council.
A book becomes a TLC Choice Pick when three or more TLC members have read it and would recommend it to other teens. While we are talking, we pass around a notebook in which people nominate titles and/or put their names next to books they recommend that other TLC members have nominated. We also talk about movies and music as well as books.
· Nimisha – The Lost Symbol, by Dan Brown. If you like Dan Brown books, you’ll like this. It’s more in to the Masons in America and it’s really good.
· Monica – Paper Towns, by John Green. Kinda weird. It’s about a guy looking for a girl who disappears. Got bored half way through.
· Rhiannon – Venomous, by Christopher Krovatin. Serious anger management guy ends up hurting all his relationships. Interesting look on teen friendships.
· Divya - The Betraying Season, by Marissa Doyle. Twins escape Queen Victoria. Really good. Sequel to The Bewitching Season.
· Divya – City of Bones trilogy, by Cassandra Clare. Werewolves, vampires. Have to find cup, mirror, and sword.
· Shawyon – The Magic Engineer, by L.E. Modesitt, Jr. One of a huge series called “Saga of Recluce.” Jumps around in time. Pretty good.
· Erin - Catching Fire, by Suzanne Collins. Liked it, but didn’t love it. Too much of a repeat of the first book. Excited about the next, though. Sequel to The Hunger Games.
· Nimisha - Vampire Academy, by Richelle Mead. It’s not like Twilight. Better character development. Different than other vampire stories.
· Nimisha – Paradise Lost, by John Milton. Kind of interesting, out there. Long poem about a war between angels and demons.
· Divya - The Magician, by Michael Scott. Sequel to The Alchemist. Interesting to see how the twins change over their adventures.
· Divya – Cirque Du Freak, by Darren Shan. Endless stories about Darren, the vampire assistant.
· Ray – The Manga Guide to Calculus, by Hiroyuki Kojima. Actually does have calculus. “Good gift for nerds.”
· Katie – The Da Vinci Code, by Dan Brown. Went by really fast.
· Michael – The Brethren: Inside the Supreme Court, by Bob Woodward and Scott Armstrong. Social changes and civil rights in the Supreme Court 60s and 70s.
· Michael – William J. Brennan, biography by ? Most liberal judge in America but not given credit.
· Michael - The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court, by Jeffrey Toobin. Longest court without anyone dying. 1994-2009
· Rhiannon - Crashing Me, by ? Four teens who are suicidal. They meet online and go on a road trip.
· Rhiannon – Scarlett, by ? Horrible.
· Gina – “Dead Poet Society” movie. Surprising ending. Had to remind herself of the time period.
· Gina – The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Re-read it. Lily wants to know how her mom died, but doesn’t have a good father.
· Michael – “Paranormal Activity” movie. Most boring movie ever. Laughed through the whole thing.
· Ray – “Signs” movie. About crop circles appearing in fields. Alien invasion. Not scary. Some funny parts.
· Katie – “One Missed Call” movie. It’s pretty stupid.
· Katie – “Dracula” movie. 1931 version. Cheesy.
· Katie – “The Haunting in Connecticut “ movie. Guy has cancer. Scary. Lives in the basement of a cemetery.
· Katie – “Little Shop of Horrors” movie. Like “Sweeney Todd.”
· Priya – “Bogeyman” movie. Really bad.
· Erin – “When the Stranger Calls” movie. She’s stupid. But it’s scary.
· Jamie – Real, by Takehiko Inoue - Wheelchair basketball. Graphic novel.
· Jamie – Just Listen, by Sarah Dessen. Really good.
· Jamie – Along for the Ride, by Sarah Dessen. Girl has a controlling mom, so moves to live with her dad and stepmom.
· Vienna – Wintergirls, by Laurie Halse Anderson. Girls with eating disorders. One dies. Other sees her ghost.
· Jessica – The Summoning, by Kelley Armstrong. Girl is a necromancer.
